Morning Whale Watch

Posted by EM@KING.NET

During this two-hour whale watch, the Teralani searches for the Pacific humpback whale. Each winter, the Pacific humpback whale migrates from Alaska to the waters off the coast of Maui. These "gentle giants" are one of Maui's most prized visitors with their spectacular breaching and tail slapping. Throughout whale season (December 15 - April 15), the Teralani departs each day from Kaanapali for a daily excursion. A marine naturalist is onboard to offer insights and education on the humpback whale. ...

Microsoft will power Yahoo search for the next 10 years.

Posted by Support @ Whaddya.com On 7/29/2009 12:12:00 AM 0 comments
It's about time to complete the search transaction between Microsoft and Yahoo. This will provide a competitive search against Google. I hope publishers will benefits to the partnerships of Microsoft and Yahoo. As publisher, we now have alternative source of income between Google Adsense and Yahoo Publishers/Microsoft Ad Center.

"Microsoft and Yahoo officially inked on July 29 the search ad deal everyone's been talking about: Microsoft agreed to power Yahoo's search engine, and Yahoo agreed to become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies' search advertisers.

coming 18 months after Microsoft failed to buy Yahoo for $44.6 billion, has a duration of 10 years, during which the Microhoo combination will be working feverishly to chip away at search engine giant Google's 65 percent market share.

Microsoft and Yahoo hold 8.4 percent and 19.6 percent of the market, respectively; together, they believe closing the gap will make them a worthy adversary of Google." (2009, eweek.com)

India to issue National ID to all 1.2 Billion Citizens

Posted by Support @ Whaddya.com On 7/17/2009 12:46:00 AM 0 comments
This is an excellent move by the Indian government to improve their national ID program. I hope this will be implemented as well in Philippines. There's nothing wrong to dream about improvement :) .

"The national ID program hopes to clear up current bureaucratic tangles common in India, where citizens might be issued almost 20 different forms of identification. Adding to the confusion, many of those IDs don't work in different parts of the country." (2009, popsci.com)

The article also mentioned that if you stacked up the cards on top of each other, the resulting pile would be 150 times taller than Mount Everest. That's a lot of cards.

RIAA won it's case for $1.9M total fines.

Good morning. Everyday you read an interesting news and today is just another day. You can be fine of $80,000 of copyright violation per song. This is interesting story to share to everyone. Please continue to read.

"The Recording Industry Association of America won its case—to the tune of $1.92 million—gainst a Minnesota woman for allegedly downloading 24 songs. The RIAA has continued an aggressive campaign against digital piracy, as propagated through P2P networks, although this case represents the first one successfully brought to trial.

One music fan out there could be paying $80,000 for a Green Day track—whether he or she likes it or not.

The Recording Industry Association of America won a major victory June 18 in Minnesota federal court, which ruled that Jammie Thomas-Rasset was guilty of copyright violation for downloading 24 songs using the Kazaa file-sharing network.

The court fined Thomas-Rasset $1.92 million, which translates into $80,000 per song. It represents the first time a filing-sharing case has successfully gone to trial. The downloaded artists in question included Green Day and Sheryl Crow." (2009, eweek.com).

New iPhone coming by June 2009

If you're planning to buy a new mobile phone, I recommend to wait 'till June 8 where Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2009 (WWDC09) will happen on June 8-12 in San Francisco, new technologies will be announce.

"A new image we obtained is embedded above and shows the same matte case beside the current iPhone 3G, which is housed in a shinier plastic casing. The side-by-side image shows the clear difference between the two finishes. We have no further evidence that this case necessarily represents what the next iPhone will look like, but it does seem to be consistent with circulating rumors." (2009, Macrumors.com)

Whaddya have IE issue after installing KB963027?

Posted by Anonymous On 5/13/2009 12:27:00 AM 0 comments
We do automatic update for Microsoft Security Updates on a weekly schedule. This is to minimize risk of exposure against known vulnerability, patching the hole (threat) as soon as possible. Though this is not the perfect approach, well there is no perfect approach to secure your environment anyway.

Again, minimizing risk according to your business acceptable loss. You need to do Risk Assessment first to determine the acceptable loss in ($) dollar value and ask your management "What Business are we in?" then you can create directives on how you can implement countermeasures. As always, countermeasures solution should be below the value of assets that you are trying to protect.

Going back to the subject. After installing KB963027 on April 15, 2009. My customers started complaining not able to connect to some websites they normally visit. A good example, a website that authenticate their credentials to do their daily tasks. Another user, not able to visit Adobe website. Another user, not able to visit Facebook website.

For the Facebook access. I suppose to not assist the user because this is not allowed in the business environment but I'm curious to fix it anyway. I was able to correct it by resetting the IE settings back to "Reset all Zones to default level". Click on Tools, Internet Options, click the Security tab to see the "Reset all Zones to default level" button.

For the first 2 websites problem, I need to remove the KB963027 patch to the workstation to fix the problem. Go to Control Panel, double click on "Add or Remove programs" icon, scroll down and look for the patch you would like to uninstall. After uninstalling the KB963027, they can access the website again.

Other alternative solutions:
- Install the IE 8.0 and trust the website, you should be able to access the website again.
- Using Google Chrome, I have no problem using Google Chrome going these websites.

Internet user IDs turn honest

Posted by Anonymous On 5/11/2009 12:18:00 AM 0 comments
I am reading this article and I would like to know if my visitors are now part of this change? Read the article for details.

"In the 1998 box office hit “You’ve Got Mail,” the anonymous screen names of Meg Ryan (Shopgirl) and Tom Hanks (NY152) turned unwitting foes into paramours, giving Americans their first dose of a digital-age romantic comedy.

Early AOL users may chuckle now at that signature dial-up modem din: a strung-out chorus of pings and bleeps interrupted by the fuzz of static and white noise. And these days, handles like Shopgirl and NY152 seem so, well, 1998.

More than 10 years later, Internet handles are practically second to one’s identity. They signal our arrival in e-mail inboxes and can often be the first impression we make. User names of yore-college-era holdovers or an inscrutable series of computer-generated numbers tacked on to one’s login-are increasingly frowned upon as unprofessional and frivolous." (2009, ajc.com)
Righ now, I still use my website for this purpose and I will introduce myself when we have a formal communication e.g. through email or phone conversation. The primary reason is to let our visitors to remember our website address e.g. KING.NET, just like in the making of our business brand.

Here's another interesting information for future use of the Internet and how you will address them now.
"My wife will kill me for saying this,” he said. “If we ever have kids, I’ll only name them something if the domain name is available.” (2009, ajc.com)
I actually registered all names of my children e.g. firstnamelastname.com. I can't register our lastname as it was taken years ago. So if you have the opportunity to register your lastname or your fullname, do it soon before someone else register the domain name.

Microsoft rebrands Windows Genuine Advantage to Windows Activation Technologies.

I've read this news from eweek.com today. I don't see the benefits of changing WGA to another name. Since we are in IT Consulting business, I guess I need to be aware of this change. Continue reading for more info.

"Formerly known as Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA), the anti-piracy technology has been rebranded Windows Activation Technologies in Windows 7. But in addition to the name change, the company has tweaked the technology to improve the user experience.

“While we have seen success with our implementation in Windows Vista, as evident from the lower levels of piracy, we also knew we could do better in Windows 7,” stated Joe Williams, general manager for Worldwide Genuine Windows at Microsoft, in a Q&A interview posted on the company’s Web site." HOWTO perform this to your workstation or servers?
Here's the step by step procedure to run systeminfo for Windows Vista, XP or Servers.
- Click on Start (or Windows icon for Vista), in Run type cmd command. This will open a command prompt.
- In command prompt, type systeminfo hit [enter]. This will start reading your workstation information and display this to you on your screen.
- You may also type "systeminfo > 20090502.KING.NET.txt [enter].

where:
systeminfo is the tool to gather your workstation information
> telling your system to transfer information to
20090502.KING.NET.txt is the name of the text file to store the report.

Now you can read your report using notepad.

You may also install the support tools for Windows Server to run uptime utility.

Leave me your feedback.
Cheers,

Twitter spikes their traffic to 19Million

Posted by Anonymous On 4/24/2009 01:54:00 AM 2 comments
They are now serving at least 19 Million visitors, and I'm proud to say I am one of them (follow me at http://t.king.net).

"Twitter’s march towards world domination continues apace. This morning comScore released its global numbers for March, 2009. Worldwide visitors to Twitter.com increased 95 percent in the month of March from 9.8 million to 19.1 million, according to its estimates. This compares to9.3 million visitors in the U.S. alone.

These numbers only count visitors to Twitter’s Website, which is not the same as active users and also does not include people who interact with Twitter via desktop or mobile clients (a large portion of users). But the comScore numbers provide a good proxy for Twitter’s overall growth, which was helped recently by Ashton Kutcher’s race with CNN to one million followers, and Oprah’s subsequent adoption of the service.

If Twitter can keep this rate of growth up, it should cross 50 million visitors by summer" (2009, TechCrunch.com)

Whaddya like to know the future of Web3.0?

Just like me, I know you would like to know more about the Web 3.0 features and advancement that it will bring to your website. I know Google will adapt this changes to their platform so I guess I'm ok for now.

Here's an article I read from AssociatedCities.com today:

"ST. LOUIS – As the world turns and time turns into the inevitable tomorrow, what does that future hold for GeoDomains faced with Web 3.0?

In the first couple phases of the Internet, Web sites established themselves within the miraculous realm of just being there and being accessible by anyone with a computer and modem.

In Web 2.0, the bells and whistles were added and the interplay between the user and provider became more prevalent.

What are experts expecting for Web 3.0? How does an average Web site and GeoDomain owner keep up? Here are some predictions and expectations for the next phase of the Internet." (2009, AssociatedCities.com).

Oracle Buys Sun

Posted by Anonymous On 4/21/2009 12:12:00 AM 0 comments
Good morning.

This is one of the news that you don't expect to happen real soon. I was reading an article last week about IBM buying SUN, ending up with Oracle.

"Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL) and Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) announced today they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun common stock for $9.50 per share in cash. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun’s cash and debt. “We expect this acquisition to be accretive to Oracle’s earnings by at least 15 cents on a non-GAAP basis in the first full year after closing. We estimate that the acquired business will contribute over $1.5 billion to Oracle’s non-GAAP operating profit in the first year, increasing to over $2 billion in the second year. This would make the Sun acquisition more profitable in per share contribution in the first year than we had planned for the acquisitions of BEA, PeopleSoft and Siebel combined,” said Oracle President Safra Catz." Cloud Computing is the future of Software as a Service (SaaS)

Posted by Anonymous On 4/20/2009 12:36:00 AM 1 comments
I have some readers asking more information about Cloud Computing and what I recommend. I personally tested Mozy.com for my home workstation (a laptop) because they offer free for 2GB (read the test here) personal and non-profit. The capacity is enough to cover my project files and if this is not enough, you can upgrade to unlimited for $4.95 per month only.

I can't compare and test other Cloud Computing services out there because of upfront fees involve. They don't have a free account where you can test it before you use it. If you know other Cloud Computing services not listed here, please let me know so I can take a look. I'm hoping Google, Yahoo or Microsost will offer backup service soon.

And if you are using a similar service, please share your experience with us.

By the way, if you use Mozy for personal or non-profit use you might be able to increase your allocated free space by recommending their service to other users. Cool huh!

Thank you,

I'm planning to buy my own Netbook, just like you confuse where to get one or which one is better.

I have a basic requirements for my netbook, as listed below:
  • at low PRICE as possible.
  • at least 1GB memory. The 2 or 4 Gb memory will be nice but the price will go up.
  • at least 80Gb hard disk. Harddisk is cheap so this will not be a problem.
  • with Wireless and RJ-45 connector
  • CD/DVD optional but it would be great to have it built-in. The Panasonic CF-w4 or w5 comes with built-in DVD and they still manage to make it small. The price is not within my budget.
Here's a good Netbook comparison I've found from cnet.co.uk website. Check it before you decide to buy.

Leave us your feedback. Thank you.
