Morning Whale Watch

Posted by EM@KING.NET

During this two-hour whale watch, the Teralani searches for the Pacific humpback whale. Each winter, the Pacific humpback whale migrates from Alaska to the waters off the coast of Maui. These "gentle giants" are one of Maui's most prized visitors with their spectacular breaching and tail slapping. Throughout whale season (December 15 - April 15), the Teralani departs each day from Kaanapali for a daily excursion. A marine naturalist is onboard to offer insights and education on the humpback whale. ...

Whaddya know why .TV still not dominating the cyberspace?

Posted by Anonymous On 5/05/2009 12:45:00 AM 8 comments
Why .TV still not dominating the cyberspace? Do you know the answer to this question? Well if not, here's my humble opinion why.

The .TV domain extension probably the best alternative if the .com .net .org .info or .biz are no longer available for your business. The .TV is the country code assigned to Tuvalu, the registry is currently managed by Verisign with Enom partnership to sell. This is the most common abbreviation in every language, from youngster to adult.

Why other businesses is not using .TV? For one is the price tag per year to maintain a generic domain name or referred as premium domain name. Let's use Texas.TV and Florida.TV, as of writing this article they are still available to register at a premium tag price, $50K and $25K per year respectively. If you're starting a small business, you will likely get a .com for a less than $10 per year maintenance (check price at NeedName.com) instead of .TV domain name. They (registry) continue to increase the price of premium domain name. I remember checking Florida.TV for only $7K in early May of 2007 and before that I was able to registered .TV between $35-$50 per year in 2005 under Verisign management. I still own Posses.TV domain name as of this year.

I've seen many .TV domain names that reprice to $3K, 5K or even $10K per year if not renew by the current owner. What's the business logic behind the reprice of domain name registration for .TV? You beat me, just like you I'm confused and can't justify the needs to reprice an expired domain name. From my own experience, I did not renew VD.TV and Belgium.TV last year so you will expect that these domains are re-registered by now. Wrong, they are still available for you to register if you have $10K to burn per year. I've seen 2 letter .TV also reprice from $1K to $5k or $10K per year. It must be working for Verisign (or Enom) with this approach but I saw many investors backing down in .TV, some reducing their portfolio and re-invest their money to other domain extension where the renewal is under $10 only.

Don't get me wrong, I like .TV extension because of it's global market appeal. But if Verisign (or Enom) will not change their "premium" pricing soon. This business will collapse before you know it.

Here are the successful media businesses that are using .TV domain name.
TNT.TV, ComcastSportsNet.TV, MTV.TV, Justin.TV and more websites added here.

Someone had asked me what tools to use for Video Streaming for a website. My quick answer is, have you tried Mogulus or uStream.TV? These two are my favorite. I have no comparison chart available (soon) but WebTVwire.com had one written for you to make your life easier to decide which path to take.

Other tools to consider are Kyte.tv, Operator11, Justin.tv, stickam, webex (cisco) and webinar.com. Check them out and share you opinion here.

Thank you,

I've read this post today from SearchEngineLand.com, google ends their video services and concentrate on YouTube service. It makes sense anyway, Google own both video services.

Google’s announced they’re closing or ceasing development of a variety of products as part of analready continuing move to keep efforts focused on other products with greater usage. These include an end to video uploads to Google Video, closure of Google Catalog SearchGoogle NotebookDodgeball, the microblogging service Jaiku and the Google Mashup Editor.

Whaddya know how to install PHPMotion script?

Posted by Anonymous On 9/25/2008 01:07:00 AM 5 comments
Are you having issue installing the PHPMotion version 2.0? Here's a simple guide to help you resolve this issue.

Web Server Background:

  • Server is running Linux Apache environment
  • PHP 5.2.x version

Installation of PHPMotion version 2.0

  • Identify your existing web server environment.
  • Create a php.info file to your webserver with this code " "
  • With the information from phpinfo, you will be able to identify the right version to download e.g. 4.o or 5.x php released.
  • Download the script (www.phpmotion.com), go to download section
  • Unzip the file to your local folder.
  • Upload these files and folders to your webserver, in root directory.
  • CHMOD all the following files and directories to 777 the following folders
    /setup
    /pictures
    /classes
    /temp
    /logs
    /addons
    /uploads
    /uploads/avi
    /uploads/thumbs
    /uploads/audio
    /uploads/audio/temp
    /uploads/pictures
  • CHMOD all the following files and directories to 755
    /cgi-bin/all files in there
    /cgi-bin/audio/all files in there
  • Start the installation wizard by going to http://www.king.net/setup (replace king.net with your real domain name)
  • Follow and provide the information needed e.g. MySQL database username and password, etc.

When I first check my installation for www.king.net, I've got this error:

Warning: dl() [function.dl]: Temporary module name should contain only filename in /home/xxx/public_html/classes/config.php on line 2PHP script /home/xxx/public_html/classes/config.php is protected by phpSHIELD and requires the phpSHIELD loader phpshield.5.2.lin. The phpSHIELD loader has not been installed, or is not installed correctly. Please visit the phpSHIELD php encoder site to download required loader.

To resolve the phpSHIELD error, check your php extension_dir. You can find this information through your www.king.net/info.php, see above what specific code to put to info.php file.

Ex. extension_dir = /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/ ;

You will then need to copy 1 file from your ftp folder into this "extension library". The file to copy is located in the "phpshield" folder and its named phpshield.5.2.lin.

Example of how to copy this file. (This is done via ssh as root user)

cp -a /your_local/folder/phpshield/phpshield.5.2.lin /usr/local/lib/php/extensions

where; /usr/local/lib/php/extensions is the location of your extension_dir

Now, visit www.king.net and you will be able to see the default install of PHPMotion version 2.0. Please note replace www.king.net with your actual domain name.

I hope this help.

Since we launched the new design and new services for Michigan.TV last week, I received some questions related to uploading their video and what do I recommend for them to use. Hands up, I told them to use Michigan.TV for uploading unlimited video, music and photo. Not to be bias, YouTube is great for mass audience for your video but if you want quality HD-like internet video go check out Vimeo.com. Vimeo offer you the best HD video on the web.

Check out the HD Channel.

YouTube Paying Upfront for Content

Posted by Anonymous On 6/21/2008 08:49:00 AM 0 comments
When YouTube launched its new indie short film destination The Screening Room earlier this week, we had heard rumors that the video sharing site actually paid creators an upfront fee to license films like Love and War and Our Time is Up for the new section.

When asked, YouTube spokesperson Ricardo Reyes told us via email “The economics of our deals are subject to confidentiality provisions, but we are experimenting with a variety of limited promotional sponsorship programs.”

In a follow up phone call, Reyes told me that he “can’t confirm but not denying” that YouTube is paying for content for The Screening Room. Additionally, when referencing his earlier email Reyes said that YouTube itself could be considered a “sponsor.”

Microsoft Buys Navic for TV Ads

Posted by Anonymous On 6/18/2008 07:13:00 AM 0 comments
Microsoft failed to get Yahoo to increase their online search presence and go head to head with Google. Well, Microsoft move on and acquired Navic networks to extend its ad platform to television.

About Navic:
Navic's technology is transforming television advertising through sophisticated campaign management tools that use real-time audience measurement data to optimize the delivery and placement of targeted interactive media. Navic's closed-loop solutions are designed to ensure continued campaign success across local or vast geographical areas that span multiple MSO divisions and platforms.

In the news:
Buying Navic is also a way to keep pace with Google, which is making a push to enter the estimated $80 billion TV ad market. McAndrews said Navic differs from Google's approach by working directly with cable companies versus satellite services, allowing greater targeting and not forcing broadcasters to use an auction. Project Canoe, which recently recruited Aegis Media Americas CEO David Verklin to head it, is attempting to bring ad targeting to TV through a consortium of cable companies.

"Our ultimate goal is to take the things you can do on the Internet, including targeting and accountability, to television," McAndrews said. "We see TV looking a lot like the Internet.

Why you need to register your own .TV domain name?

Posted by Anonymous On 6/15/2008 12:28:00 AM 0 comments
Sponsor: NeedName.com register your .TV domain name.

While TV’s place as the preeminent channel for Americans to watch video content remains safe for now, results from recent research conducted by Ipsos MediaCT shows that the PC is slowly encroaching on the TV’s dominance, capturing an increasing amount of screen time among those who download or stream video online.

Within this article, you will read this quote "shows that the percentage of video consumed on a TV among video downloaders and streamers declined from 75% in February 2007 to 70% in February 2008 – a small, yet significant drop in overall ‘share of screen time’ with the growing contingent of digital video users."
