Morning Whale Watch

During this two-hour whale watch, the Teralani searches for the Pacific humpback whale. Each winter, the Pacific humpback whale migrates from Alaska to the waters off the coast of Maui. These "gentle giants" are one of Maui's most prized visitors with their spectacular breaching and tail slapping. Throughout whale season (December 15 - April 15), the Teralani departs each day from Kaanapali for a daily excursion. A marine naturalist is onboard to offer insights and education on the humpback whale. ...

Whaddya know any alternative FTP client? Preferably FTP open source.

Posted by Support @ Whaddya.com On 7/31/2009 12:50:00 AM 0 comments
I'm using CoreFTP limited edition, free version of the program for my daily uploading website contents. I've noticed in many occasion that I'm having problem uploading big files. So I decided to try Filezilla FTP client.

The filezilla FTP client is another open-source that you can use to upload or download files. Not just a client, the Filezilla offer a server version for Windows to make files available for others to download. As of this date, they only provide FileZilla Server for Windows only.

I've installed and tested it, easy setup and fast to upload files to my server. Check it out and let me know if you have questions.

MagicJack configuration update.

I received feedback from our readers regarding the article of MagicJack that I wrote last October 10, 2008 (Cost Effective VOIP) through search engine archive. They said that it is working intermittent for them, sometimes ok and most of the time they can't establish a good connection.

If you are not using a firewall, even running a Windows XP or Vista operating system you should be able to make and receive calls. I've tested this type of setup.

Now with the Firewall device on your network, you need to open the following ports for you to make and receive calls successfully. These ports are listed requirements from MagicJack website.
UDP Port 5060 inbound/outbound
UDP Port 5070 inbound/outbound

I open this additional UDP ports (UPD Port 10000-65535 inbound/outbound) to make a consistent calls. So far, all incoming and outgoing calls are working for me. I haven't check the security vulnerabilities of opening these UDP ports. I have Internet cable and using dynamic external IP Address. In my humble opinion, UDP port attack in dynamic IP address is minimal or maybe not possible. I will check and make a follow up if I find something interesting to share.

Cheers for now.
Just in case you are looking for free version or open source to unzip tar zip gzip bzip2 and other file archiving tools, here's one for you.

"7-Zip is open source software. Most of the source code is under theGNU LGPL license. The unRAR code is under a mixed license: GNU LGPL + unRAR restrictions." (2009, 7-zip.org)

If you know other file archiver tool for free to use, please share it with us.

NetworkQuery.com is the complete open-source toolkit of network utilities e.g. Whois, Whois IP, DNS, DIG, Port, Ping, Trace Route, etc. powered by Netquery scripts coded by Richard Virtue. I first used this tool in early 2000, the copy I've got is written and coded by different programmer. I'm sorry I can't remember the name to give him credit. And I believe Richard Virtue brought this scripts to the next level and now supporting different CMS aside stand alone installation. The NetworkQuery.com is a perfect example of Stand Alone installation of the scripts.

Whaddya like to have a Dictionary in your iPhone?

Posted by Anonymous On 4/08/2009 04:20:00 AM 0 comments
Well your wait is over. Dictionary.com is offering FREE apps for your iPhone. Yes, it is free compare to Mirriam Webster Dictionary that offer the same service for $24.95.

"The app let you easily access spelled words, alphabetical indexing, synonyms exampel sentences, non-standard uses, word origin and history. Another cool feature of the app is the ability to access definitions and synonyms offline. You can also hear pronunciations of words. The app store currently features ten dictionary apps." (2009, TechCrunch.com)

This will be in addition of my own personal iPhone free apps e.g. Translator, Skype and Holy Bible, all of them are for FREE. Check them out.

Thank you,

SM.TV is now live and ready to serve you.

We are proud to announce that SM.TV short URL service is now live. And yes, this is a short URL service just like other short services that you see everyday.

We thought that another website offering free service is always a good thing, to create a friendly competition so the business that provides these kind of service will stay free for all Internet users. A friendly competition will help move the technology to the next level so they can provide us a better service and better product.

We are using an open source script coded by R Guerin of TightURL.com , here's a sneak peek of some useful features:
  • Squeeze that long URL to a "really" short URL e.g. using http://sm.tv/h to redirect to a long URL address where no one can remember. This is the reason we use SM.TV domain name for this specific purpose.
  • Checks submitted and accepted URLs against SURBL "Lists of website that appeared in unsolicited messages" (2009, SURBL) and URIBL "Lists domains taht appear in spam, NOT where they were sent" (2009, URIBL) to prevent abuse by the Bad People of the Internet.
  • It is a FREE software, licensed under the GNU GPL.
Please visit the website SM.TV to test drive our Short URL service and let us know what you think.

Skype is now available in Apps Store

Posted by Anonymous On 4/01/2009 12:33:00 AM 0 comments
UPDATE: I used my iPhone Apps Store to get this information for Skype.

"Skype is free calls and instant messages. And you can call landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world at great rates. Skype is free to download and easy to use.

Free Skype-to-Skype Callls

With Skype on your iPhone or iPod touch, simply sign into Skype from any WiFi zone, and call friends and family on Skype totally free.

See who's online and instant message them.

Sign into Skype via 3G, Edge, GPRS or WiFi and check who's online - then instant message them whenever and wherever the mood strikes."

===
This is an excellent application add-on to your iPhone or iPod where you can instant messaging (chat) and talk free through your WIFI service, 3G, GPRS or EDGE which ever is available. I'm not sure about the video feature if this will be part of Skype iPhone Apps.

I visited Skype.com website to get the details of Skype Apps but I can't find this information from their website. Maybe I'm too fast for them. Well I will check them again.

More Security Loopholes Found In Google Docs

If you're heavily using Google Docs (just like me) for sharing documents, you need to read this article from TechCrunch.com. The current issue is related to sharing documents, embedded pictures and archiving your documents. For details, continue reading the article.

"Security consultant Ade Barkah checked in with us to alert us to a couple of serious security issues associated to Google Docs, the web-based office software from the world’s most famous search engine company, giving a whole new meaning to its mission to make the world’s information universally accessible. On his blog on software, infrastructure and security, Barkah outlines no less than three issues that he discovered while investigating some potential security lapses." (2009, TechCrunch.com)

Another excellent Network Management Tools

Posted by Anonymous On 1/28/2009 01:01:00 AM 0 comments
Guest post by Elisabeth Buford of PacketTrap.com

In September 2008, PacketTrap Networks launched Perspective, providing network discovery, monitoring, and alerting including traffic flow (NetFlow, Sflow / J-Flow), VoIP and wireless modules; application monitoring; policy-based remediation; and advanced visualization and reporting. Perspective is fully integrated with all the tools available in the pt360 product suite (i.e., Cisco configuration management, switch port mapping, traffic generator, scanning utilities, etc.). With a next-generation visual interface, Perspective provides drag-and-drop dashboard functionality and a single pane of glass for tasks which typically have network engineers flipping between multiple screens and applications. Perspective contains both a thin-client and a browser-based interface.

Key Benefits
The following are the key benefits of PacketTrap Perspective.

  • It’s simple – load and go. Perspective’s “time to productivity” is very short. The solution takes roughly fifteen minutes to install, configure and customize so it can be in operation very quickly. Discovery is a simple three-step process with the average time for sub-net discovery being approximately two minutes. Smart Policies are automatically assigned and users can simply overwrite them using an intuitive straight-forward interface.
  • Eliminate “false positive” problems. Once the exclusive purview of much more expensive solutions, Perspective allows for rolling baselines for alert thresholds, trending back up to four weeks. Checkboxes allow for grouping of baselines so that Monday morning log-on and e-mail rushes don’t create false positives, for example. Alerts are delivered as SMS or e-mail messages and provide in-depth information about the issue at-hand.
  • Taking action is easy. Perspective allows for on-demand, scheduled and automated actions to be taken with the ability to restore services when a failure occurs, including restarting applications and windows services, or rebooting servers, automated reset of alerts as appropriate, or escalation of the issue. E-mail alerts are generated following policy rules, allowing for quick communication to impacted IT personnel.
  • Everybody gets a peek. A read-only drag-and-drop dashboard allows all levels of the organization to get a context-appropriate view into the application and network activities. The dashboard allows for Top 10 lists (i.e., the top ten most active applications), and customized tabs allow for large amounts of disparate data to be managed from a single, clean interface. Perspective also includes built-in security measures to ensure only authorized users are allowed to access their assigned areas of the network.
  • Flexible reporting. Reports can be generated graphically or by lists with real-time or historical views. The easy-to-use reporting interface allows for exporting to PDF formats or emailing links for executives to view the reports live from the Perspective.

No legacy baggage. Unlike most of its competitors, both large and small, Perspective is built on true next-generation platform without all the kludges and workarounds inherent in older products. For this reason, Perspective’s performance outpaces its rivals.

[Update]
I downloaded a copy of pt360 Tool Suite , registered and it will expire year 2029. This is really cool. Well, let's see how it easy to use this network management tool.

I've installed IPSwitch Whats Up Gold and pt360 Tool Suite, both for my first time use. I easily configured them without a problem. The amazing part is I can see my network activity (Dashboard) within 15 -20 minutes after installation.

Without looking further, I prefer to use pt360 Tool Suite to manage my network to save $ in my IT budget.

I'm not stopping here, I will continue to assess these tools and compare them for you.

Thank you,

Cost Effective VOIP for Home or Business use.

Posted by Anonymous On 10/17/2008 01:02:00 AM 2 comments
I just completed my test of MagicJack VOIP phone service. Before I start sharing my install and troubleshooting experience using this service, here's a few information before you begin reading this article.

If you plan to save your phone bill, this is a great solution for you. If you don't plan to save (who do not?), don't bother to read this article.

If you like Skype saving $ to your phone bills, you will love this product as well. If you are currently using Vonage for your residential, you will definitely like the cost saving of MagicJack.

Well I guess I covered the basic information.

I bought 2 MagicJack for work. I was able to register the first MagicJack without any glitch, it's a plug and play setup to my laptop. I was able to initiate and receive calls after 10-20 minutes of setup. I said wow! that's a great product.

The 2nd MagicJack is not as smooth as the first install, there are some glitch and I will explain in details.

I first installed the 2nd MagicJack to my laptop with Windows VISTA Operating System which is also supported according to their website. By the way, I think the website was designed poorly and need an intervention in my humble opinion. Well, I've seen worst web designed anyway so I will let this slip. Going back to the VISTA issue, I need to install a patch or upgrade for my VISTA operating system.

After the installation of patch for my Windows VISTA Operating System. I thought my misery is over, oops I'm running a firewall so I need to open ports. If you're not using a firewall, and most cable modem or broadband service install is set by default "OPEN". You should be able to start using your MagicJack VOIP service.

What ports to open to your firewall?
To save you some research work about firewall ports information, here's what you need to open.

You need to open ports between 5060 to 5070 using UDP protocol. After you add this to your Firewall policy, you should be able to initiate call.

By the way, if you're interested to know the VONAGE ports to use. Here's the port lists:
VONAGE_SIP port number 5061 UDP protocol
VONAGE_NTP port number 123 UDP protocol
VONAGE_TFTP port number 2400 UDP protocol
VONAGE_RTP port number 10000 to 20000 UDP protocol

Going back to testing MagicJack phone. After setting up my firewall policy, I was able to initiate a call to the outside world ... yipeee! Test receiving call ... ops it didn't work "the number cannot be reach". I've checked my connection, everything seems to be working properly. I tried moving MagicJack to another laptop with XP operating system, same result. Check the Internet to get some information to resolve this issue failed as well. By the way, BEWARE to visit some websites aside MagicJack (and My.King.Net) posting to offer solution. After visiting their websites, my anti-virus application start showing malware program trying to access my workstation. Tsk!

So I surfed MagicJack.com website to find their customer live support via chat. Believe me, looking for this information to their website is a challenge. I was looped many times before I even get to start a chat session.

Well the bright side is Lira (2nd level of support) from the live support was able to help me resolved this issue. To make the troubleshooting story short, she asked me to change my phone through My.MagicJack.com portal. Login using your email address e.g. my e-mail @king.net and password. Click on "change my number", this is for the first time. Unplug your MagicJack USB connection to your computer or reset through MagicJack softphone to re-initiate your connection. You should be able to see the new phone number if your MagicJack device was reset properly.

Viola, after changing phone number I was able to receive calls.

I ordered another one for my residential phone to replace my VONAGE phone. No need a brain surgery to decide, I'm paying $24.95 ($30 including taxes) per month for unlimited service for VONAGE compare to $19.95 per year for MagicJack. You do the math. I might also consider getting the $59.95 for 5 years Platinum plan to save even more.

At the end of the day, you will decide for your own and good luck to you.

CONS:
- You computer must be up 24/7 to use your VOIP service

Whaddya need html tool? Notepad++ free source code editor

Posted by Anonymous On 9/10/2008 01:28:00 AM 0 comments
I have another free code editor tool to share with you folks. It only takes 5 minutes to download and install the program. If notepad is too basic for you, get Notepad++ ...

===
Notepad++ is a free (as in "free speech" and also as in "free beer") source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. It runs in the MS Windows environment.

Based on a very powerful editing component Scintilla, Notepad++ is written in C++ and uses pure Win32 API and STL which ensures a higher execution speed and smaller program size. Its use is governed by GPL Licence.

This project is mature. However, it's a one-man project and there are still some bugs and missing features that are being worked on. If you have any questions or suggestions about this project, please post them in the forums. Also, if you wish to make a feature request, you can post it there as well. But there's no guarantee that I'll implement your request.

You're encouraged to translate Notepad++ into your native tongue if there's not already a translation present in the Download Section. And if you want, help translating Notepad++ official site into your native tongue would be greatly appreciated.
I hope you enjoy Notepad++ as much as I enjoy coding it.

Visit Notepad++ official website.

Gadget Tip: Block the bad sites and whitelist the good.

Objective: To provide a basic security while surfing the Internet.

An ordinary user doesn’t know how to protect their workstation while surfing the Internet. This article will help you to close some of the security hole that you don’t know about.

What to expect when you buy your new workstation or laptop?
They only sell you the computer (e.g. desktop or laptop, accessories) with operating systems, a 30-60 days demo software’s of Anti-Virus and Microsoft Office package. Meaning after the demo period, you need to purchase a license for your computer.

What is needed?
You need to have updated Anti-Virus software e.g. Symantec, McAfee, etc. to protect your computer against new viruses.
You need to purchase a Microsoft Office with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The MS Access database is optional

What basic security you need for your computer?
Check your anti-virus software for latest update, daily update is recommended.
Run Windows Update once a month for security update.
Enable the Firewall security, search our website for a separate document for how to.
Use OpenDNS for Internet content filtering, phishing, adult site blocking, etc.

In this article, I am going to share some information on how to protect your computer while surfing the Internet.

  • First visit, http://www.opendns.com/ website and create your own account.
  • Click on Dashboard to configure your setup.
  • Click on Setting to update your Content Filtering
  • In Content Filtering, you can choose your CUSTOM filtering level. For starter here’s how to filter and recommended configuration. Put check to the following categories:

  4. Gambling
  5. Hate/Discrimination
  6. Lingerie/Bikini
  7. Music

  9. P2P/File Sharing
  10. Parked Domains
  11. Phishing
  12. Pornography
  13. Proxy
  14. Radio
  15. Sexuality
You can add more filter if you want.
  • From here you should be ok.

Or continue updating your blocklist or whitelist

  • In Manage individual domains
  • Select “Always block” type the domain for example, websearch.com
  • Click on ADD DOMAIN to block the domain.
  • Select “Always block” type another domain to block here and click on add domain.

How to apply the content filtering policy to your workstation? Instead of updating your router DNS forwarders, I recommend that you make the changes to your test computer.

If you are using Windows XP, please follow these steps to update your DNS information.

  • Click Start, then Control Panel
  • Click Network Connections
  • Double click on “Local Area Connection”Click on Properties
  • Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click on Properties
