If you're in Microsoft Windows networking environment, you know how to manage your server remotely using Remote Desktop tool with your Windows XP or VISTA workstation.
How to enable Windows Server for remote access?
This is easy, go to the Microsoft Windows Server, right click on My Computer. In System Properties, click Remote tab and put check on "Enable Remote Desktop on this computer", click OK to finish.
Then, in your workstation run MSTSC or in Accessories, click the Remote Desktop Connection icon. This will prompt you to connect to any computer (Server) that you have admin rights.
What about remote desktop access to your Ubuntu workstation?
Well that's easy to accomplish as well with the help of VNC tool. A "VNC is a protocol that allows remote display of a user's desktop" (2008, UbuntuGeek.com).
Go to your Ubuntu workstation, Systems, Preferences and Remote Desktop. In General tab, enable sharing and put check on "Require the user to enter this password". Great add-on for your security.
Download a copy of RealVNC (or other open-source VNC tool) viewer to your workstation and install it. Connect to the IP address (or hostname) of your Ubuntu desktop. You're done.
Enjoy.
