Throughout whale season (December 15 - April 15), the Teralani departs each day from Kaanapali for a daily excursion. A marine naturalist is onboard to offer insights and education on the humpback whale. ...

Whaddya apply for trademarks for your domain name?

Posted by Anonymous On 7/15/2009 12:21:00 AM 4 comments
I am wondering if I can apply for Trademarks for my "KING.NET" domain name. I am using KING.NET obviously as my main blog, to transact business in various ways from IT Consulting, Domain Name Management, Content Management System (CMS) management, Email Services, provide Howto Guide and other IT-related online services.

After reading this article I need to take time out and discuss it with local lawyers to help me file my trademark application for "KING.NET".
"Will the Domain Name Owner or Trademark Owner Win a Dispute?
Domain name owners frequently open their mail to find a letter from a law firm representing a trademark owner. These letters - called “cease and desist letters” by lawyers - demand that the domain name owner stop using the domain name, transfer the domain name to the trademark owner, and provide information about the dates of use and money made from the use of the domain name." (2009, Examiner.com)

I've checked the current owners of other extension for KING domain name. Here's the results as of this date.

Update: I am currently checking the trademark service offered in MyCorporation.com website.

.CM Sunrise Period Opens at EuroDNS

Posted by Anonymous On 6/15/2009 12:04:00 AM 2 comments
EuroDNS announced sunrise period for .CM today. The .CM is the country code top level domain (ccTLD) for the Republic of Cameroon. It is another domain name extension to use for your personal or business. Instead of having .com .net .org or .etc, you can also register randompage.cm domain name if you own the trademark rights for "randompage" starting June 15 'till July 14.

According to PR website "During the Sunrise phase, the minimum registration period is 2 years and applicants must hold a valid and issued trademark at the time of application. If there is more than one valid Sunrise application for the same domain name, the name will be awarded to the registrant with the oldest registered trademark. Each domain application costs 360 EUR with a non-refundable fee of 60 EUR, including a two years term." (2009, prweb.com)

On July 15th-31th Landrush period, all domain name applications will be subjected to a premium fee (260 EUR including 2 years term) and an auction system.

The live registration is on August 1st, 2009 where everyone can register a .CM domain name on a first come first serve basis. The minimum registration is 1 year and the price differ from registrar.

One of the sell pitch is "People often forget to type the "o" when looking for .com domain name, and having your domain name in .cm could secure a lot of traffic". (2009, prweb.com). This is the similar approach for selling .CO the country code top level domain (ccTLD) for Colombia. That's a good one but the business minded people forget to include the changes of technology. For example, some business network are now using openDNS network for web filtering security, where if you type www.randompage.co or www.randompage.cm the system will automatically redirect to www.randompage.com website. So my assumption, even you own .co or .cm domain name, the openDNS (any related web filtering tools) will consider this a typo of .com website. Making this extension useless for you.

I will not be surprise if Internet Service Provider is going to use OpenDNS web filtering tools as this service is free to use for personal or business. They can stop the fraud website on the DNS level before this going to the customer web page. And if you are not using this tool (OpenDNS), visit the website today and protect your network.

CircuitCity.com is back online

Posted by Anonymous On 5/26/2009 12:26:00 AM 0 comments
You maybe wondering why the CircuitCity.com website is back online again.

Well, it's good to know that Systemax Inc realized the value of CircuitCity.com, step up to purchased the Circuit City brand, trademark, website and other assets including the customer records.

"On May 19, 2009, Systemax Inc. purchased the Circuit City brand and website. Systemax Inc. has been in business since 1949. Systemax Inc. is a leading multi-channel retailer of computers, electronics, and industrial products in North America and Europe. Systemax Inc. is a publicly traded company on the NYSE under the symbol SYX." (2009, CircuitCity.com)

Interesting enough to see other marketing tools added to the website, such as Twitter and Facebook.

I'm on-hold buying electronic stuff at this time (well this year) except for Netbook. I can't tell if they are competetive than Best Buy. It's always nice to see other option. Cheers.
It's good to know Rick Latona highlighted some premiums .TV domain names to be included in Amsterdan auction this coming June 4th Targetted Traffic Conference. Here are the lists (some) of noted domain names up for grab.

Help.tv renewal fee of $1K with $37,500 reserve
Home.tv renewal fee of $1.5k with $90K reserve
Traffic.tv renewal fee of $750 with $25K reserve
Lawyers.tv renewal fee of $750 with $25K reserve
Sales. tv renewal fee of $750 with $14K reserve
Racing.tv renewal fee of $750 with $14K reserve
Classic.tv renewal fee of $750 with  $15k reserve
Classics.tv renewal fee of $750 with  $15k reserve
Germany.tv renewal fee of $1K with $75K reserve
Today.tv renewal fee of $750 with $9K reserve

Note: The renewal fee is per year.

As of writting this article, I've checked the ownership of the domain names still with Enom. If you go to Enom.tv website, you can still see the actual premium price as shown below.

Germany.tv $25K annually
Today.tv $5K annually
Classic.tv $5K annually
Classics.tv $5K annually
Racing.tv  $5K annually
Sales. tv  $5K annually
Lawyers.tv $7.5K annually
Traffic.tv $10K annually
Home.tv $50K annually
Help.tv  $25K annually

Even the price cut renewal of these domains, some entrepreneurs still see it too high to maintain and I agree. At this reserve amount, only established entrepreneurs, small-medium business owners and corporations can participate to this auction. I guess that's their goal.

As I've asked last couple of weeks, Why .TV still not dominating the cyberspace? despite of universal branding of TV and common "term" in every countries. I hope the auction in Amsterdamm will give enough buzz for .TV domain names. Only time can tell.

Domain Name still a good business.

Based on these random interview, you still have a shot to do business in domain name industry. A lot of opportunity to introduce the domain name as business tool to increase productivity.

"What do regular folks think of the domain industry and domainers? Howard Hits The Street to find out as he grabs a microphone and camera and strolls Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida" (2009, Youtube.com)

Whaddya know why .TV still not dominating the cyberspace?

Posted by Anonymous On 5/05/2009 12:45:00 AM 8 comments
Why .TV still not dominating the cyberspace? Do you know the answer to this question? Well if not, here's my humble opinion why.

The .TV domain extension probably the best alternative if the .com .net .org .info or .biz are no longer available for your business. The .TV is the country code assigned to Tuvalu, the registry is currently managed by Verisign with Enom partnership to sell. This is the most common abbreviation in every language, from youngster to adult.

Why other businesses is not using .TV? For one is the price tag per year to maintain a generic domain name or referred as premium domain name. Let's use Texas.TV and Florida.TV, as of writing this article they are still available to register at a premium tag price, $50K and $25K per year respectively. If you're starting a small business, you will likely get a .com for a less than $10 per year maintenance (check price at NeedName.com) instead of .TV domain name. They (registry) continue to increase the price of premium domain name. I remember checking Florida.TV for only $7K in early May of 2007 and before that I was able to registered .TV between $35-$50 per year in 2005 under Verisign management. I still own Posses.TV domain name as of this year.

I've seen many .TV domain names that reprice to $3K, 5K or even $10K per year if not renew by the current owner. What's the business logic behind the reprice of domain name registration for .TV? You beat me, just like you I'm confused and can't justify the needs to reprice an expired domain name. From my own experience, I did not renew VD.TV and Belgium.TV last year so you will expect that these domains are re-registered by now. Wrong, they are still available for you to register if you have $10K to burn per year. I've seen 2 letter .TV also reprice from $1K to $5k or $10K per year. It must be working for Verisign (or Enom) with this approach but I saw many investors backing down in .TV, some reducing their portfolio and re-invest their money to other domain extension where the renewal is under $10 only.

Don't get me wrong, I like .TV extension because of it's global market appeal. But if Verisign (or Enom) will not change their "premium" pricing soon. This business will collapse before you know it.

Here are the successful media businesses that are using .TV domain name.
TNT.TV, ComcastSportsNet.TV, MTV.TV, Justin.TV and more websites added here.

Update: See the current trends of .TV growth compare to .biz .info .us and .cn extension, courtesy by Google Trends.

Jobster is officially using Recruiting.com

Posted by Anonymous On 4/04/2009 12:40:00 AM 0 comments
This is a good action from Jobster to acquire the domain name Recruiting.com. It perfectly make sense to have this domain name to feature their own business and services. Hat off to Jobster Management and the people involve to close this transaction.

"Jobster has changed its name toRecruiting.com, with the Seattle company notifying customers of the change this week. The heavily-funded startup purchased the Recruiting.com domain name and blog in 2006 for an undisclosed price. It has been using that name for its business-to-business online recruiting tools since last July." (2009, TechFlash.com)

REDC Acquires Domain Name Auction.com for $1.7M

I've read this Press Release from the Google News today, very wise decision to make by REDC Chairman Robert Friedman. It is a great acquisition to support a business.

"RVINE, Calif., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- REDC, the leader in real estate auctions, has acquired the domain name, Auction.com, for $1.7 million, company Chairman Robert Friedman announced today.
"I've wanted this domain for years and I'm thrilled that we were able to acquire this coveted top level domain," Friedman says. "REDC is without question the number one real estate auctioneer in America and quite likely the world. This is a domain we should have had from the beginning and I'm thrilled we are finally Auction.com."
REDC's consumer website for Lender Foreclosed home auctions, until now, has been http://www.ushomeauction.com/. The company is in the process of making the conversion to http://www.auction.com/ exclusively." (2009, PRNewswire.com)

I managed some domain names for personal and business use. Once in a while, I received offers to my domains which I don't have plan of selling it anytime soon. For a couple of days, I'm received unsolicited emails from different email addresses but with the same contents.

Here's an example of email.
=======================

Hello,
I came across your domain name KING.NET (as example) and I would be interested in buying it from you. Here is my offer, you have to send me a professional appraisal from one of the following companies and I will pay you 85% of the appraise price.

For payments under $2000 I prefer to use paypal. And for larger amounts of money I prefer if we used escrow.com.

I accept appraisals from any of these companies:

(I intentionally remove the URL address of company1 ..3)
- company1
- company2
- company3

If you already have an appraisal from one of those companies please forward it to me, and we will do business.

Regards,
John Doe (example)

I will leave this to you to judge but in my humble opinion, this is a poor way to market their services and I consider it as SPAM.

dot GOD Internet Domain

"Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that allowing domains based on religion or denomination would unnecessarily create more conflicts in a world already full of disputes.

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, cautioned Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) about the hazards of allowing new Internet domains as .christian, .muslim, .hindu, .buddhist, .jew, etc.

ICANN is currently considering launching of new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD), which is the technical term for the suffixes which appear at the end of Internet addresses and are used to route traffic through the Internet, like .biz, .com, .info, .jobs, etc

Rajan Zed argued that this would generate discord and religious bodies would end up contesting various cybersquatter registrations. Similarly named denominations would claim exclusive rights to particular domains. Moreover, it would mean extra financial burden on already struggling religious organizations, benefiting mostly squatters and sellers." (2009, Webnewswire.com)
Network Solutions and CentralNic partnered to create a new company called Central Registry Solutions (CRS) to capture new business for companies interested to have their own Top Level Domain (TLD) .extension domain name. For example, you can get your own domain name extension such as .KING .BRAND .PRODUCT .SERVICE .TOUR .COMPUTER or other extension name related to the business products and services.

The company will provide Consulting and Application Assistance, and with the Registry Services solutions as listed below:
  • Domain Look-Up Service (WHOIS)
  • Domain Registrations
  • Domain Renewals
  • DNS Services
  • Domain Forwarding

Distribution and Value Added Services

CRS will guarantee distribution of domain names for its customers through Network Solutions. Adn will leverage CentralNic's network of registrar partners to provide further distribution of domain names. CRS will offer other retail services that will enable new registries to package domains with value-added services like:

  • Web Presence Services
  • On-line Marketing Services

Staying Positive through a Tough Economy

Posted by Anonymous On 1/30/2009 01:22:00 AM 0 comments
Guest Post (2009, Buydomains.com)

As we are all aware, the global financial system has brought many world economies into a recession which is affecting many businesses small and medium businesses. Let BuyDomains share with you some tips intended to help you ride through these challenging economic and come out a stronger business than before.
  • Think positive — "Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier" — Colin Powell. If you believe that achieving your success goals is impossible due to the economy — then you will most likely make this happen. Let your positive thoughts be the guide to your actions and you will succeed.
  • Keep your marketing wheels in motion — cutting costs is a necessity during a weak economy, but beware of where you cut them. Studies show that companies, who stick to their marketing plans, come out stronger when the economy turns.
  • Leverage the power of the internet — Are you selling products or services from your website? Can you expand sales through other channels? Are you leveraging the power of email marketing to its fullest extent? Is your website fully optimized for the search engines? Do you have the right domain name to drive qualified traffic to your website? Have you considered a localized domain? It doesn't have to be costly to implement an online marketing and sales strategy. At a time when every dollar counts, defining an effective Internet strategy and acquiring the right web address the first time is more important to business success than ever before — especially for businesses with limited resources and budget.
  • Reach Out to Your Customer Base — One of the most overlooked business opportunities comes from your existing and past clients. The fact that they have already done business with you makes it far more likely that they will do business with you in the future. Make sure you are not only marketing to them, but also asking for their feedback on how to serve them better. If you decide to survey your customers, make sure you share your findings with them and are implementing positive change.
  • Make Improvements — This is an ideal time to evaluate all of your policies and procedures. Could your sales team benefit from some additional training? How can you help your company perform even better? What steps can you take to improve customer loyalty? Look at your business through a magnifying class and seize the opportunity to improve it across the board.
  • Brainstorm — Tap you network and assemble a small group of people who understand your business and brainstorm opportunities. When several people get together with a blank slate and some good energy, you might be surprised by the results!
  • Think outside the box — be on the lookout for new opportunities — stay on top of the market and your industry.
  • Re-evaluate your priorities — Now is a great time to sharpen your own skills. Take classes, read books and network with others in your industry so you can learn from them. Get involved in your trade association and make sure you are on top of your game. Are you spending your energies in the right place? What can you do to make your company better and stronger? Leave the worrying to your competitors and instead seek out opportunities and stay positive. When you put the right energy and focus into your business — despite the economy — the results can extraordinary!

Name.com offers another layer of security to protect their customer using Verisign Identity Protection (VIP) Services. The two-factor authentication is something you know (username and password) and something you have (device) to access your information. This is an excellent move by Name.com management to help protect their customers domain portfolio.

The service is called NameSafe. Yes, it is a service that you need to pay Name.com for $19.95 per year. The security device will cost you $5 one time fee. Once you receive your security device (or credential as they call it), you need to register your device Serial ID and follow the instruction. You will be done in under 10 minutes.

What do you expect with this NameSafe service?
  • Better security protecting your domain names.
  • Self-learning fraud detection.
  • You can use this device (credential) to any VIP Network members. Though you have to check the cost to use this service with other VIP Network. See here who's in VIP Network Members.
  • And Security Security Security!

I think Name.com is pioneer in domain name industry to provide a two-factor authentication. I know some registrars that provides additional service where you need to call their support hotline for you to make changes of DNS, Contact Information or other domain-related changes you need. This will take some time to complete, depending on how quickly the customer service response to your call. What if you leave outside USA? Then you have to pay internaltional phone bills unless you have VOIP service in place. Definitely Namesafe service is your alternative ways to protect your domain name porfolio.

I used the same technology (two-factor authentication) managing my Paypal account but I don't have to spend $19.95 per year for using this service. I only pay for the device $5 one time fee.

I use NeedName.com Enom Technology Partner (ETP) and Moscom.com (GoDaddy) for my domains. I need to call them and find out if I can get additional layer of security for my domain portfolio. Wish me luck.
